Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. An intriguing scarab pendant that is hand-carved from mottled black-hued steatite with beige and white inclusions that features an insectile body surmounted by a distinctly anthropomorphic face. The insectile body exhibits a folded wing carapace and retracted legs, and the raised head bears almond-shaped eyes and a tall brow topped with a striated tripartite wig. The underside of the pendant is unadorned, and a horizontal suspension hole is drilled through a tab just below the face. Size: 0.875" L x 0.7" W (2.2 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Madame Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
