Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A fascinating / rare terracotta vessel, with one side of its body incised and formed to show the face of the god Bes. Made from a porous, reddish clay, the vessel has a rounded body, a simple low disc foot, an elongated neck, and a slightly flared mouth with a ring just below the unpronounced rim. The face is slightly sunken, with clear round eyes, large, almost porcine nose, small mouth, and heavy eyebrows. A dot is painted between the eyebrows. Ears and small arms ending in hands with delineated fingers complete the appearance of the god. Size: 3.6" W x 6.5" H (9.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. His figure appeared in many later Egyptian items, used to pray for luck.
