Egypt, Late Period, 712 to 300 BCE. This painted sarcophagus mask displays quintessential Egyptian beauty. It is an elegant and refined carved wooden mask with ochre painted flesh tones and black and white painted eyes and lashes. A central portion of the attachment mortise, made of cartonnage (linen or papyrus covered with plaster), remains. The mask was an essential part of the mummy, placed over the head to provide an idealized image of of the deceased as they would be resurrected. Size: 4.4" W x 6.5" H (11.2 cm x 16.5 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Ligbue Collection, Venice Italy.
