Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 30th Dynasties, ca. 664 to 343 BCE. An attractive sarcophagus mask, carved from a fine-grained hardwood, the oval/heart-shaped face emerging from a slender neck still showing remains of red pigment with finely delineated naturalistic nose and lips, well-modeled cheeks, dramatic almond-shaped eyes delineated in black and white. Remains of original paint and gesso, as well as original peg holes on backside for attachment to sarcophagus with some original pegs still in place. The mask was an essential part of the mummy, placed over the head to provide an idealized image of of the deceased. Custom stand.
