Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A wooden panel with brightly painted gesso on one side depicting the four Sons of Horus: (from left to right facing) Duamutef (jackal form), Imsety (human form), Hapi (baboon form), and Qebehsenuef (hawk form). Horus's sons were the mythological figures charged with protecting the internal organs of a mummified body, as they had originally been charged with protecting the body of Osiris; as a result, their heads often form the lids of canopic jars. Painted here, they show a pleasing symmetry, with similar mummiform bodies and only their zoomorphic headdresses distinguishably different. A polka-dotted border along the top of the panel and down one side give the impression that the figures are inside of a palace, tomb, or temple setting. Size: 8" W x 3.45" H (20.3 cm x 8.8 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
