Description:

Egypt, Late Period, 26th (Saite) Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A thin, triangular faience amulet, cast in a mold with decoration on both sides in the form of a seated ibis on a flat surface. A narrow loop for suspension is molded just behind the animal's head. The faience is a deep ocher color with hints of green. This depiction of an ibis has fine details at the eye and along the beak. With a thin chain, this piece would be wearable today! Size: 2.4" W x 1.4" H (6.1 cm x 3.6 cm)

The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the god Thoth. He was the god of wisdom and writing, and in worship to him many thousands of ibises were ritually sacrificed, embalmed, and mummified before being buried in underground galleries. Thousands of these burials have been excavated at Sakkara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital. This amulet probably belonged to a worshipper who particularly identified with Thoth, possibly a scribe.
