Description:

Ancient Art. Egypt, New Kingdom, ca. 1550 to 1070 BCE. A yellow faience amulet, flat-backed and with an openwork style, depicting the god Bes. Bes is shown with a stylized lion's mane and a large, plumed headdress. Two slits on either side of the headdress allow attachment of the amulet to a cord for wearing. There are added details on the headdress and around the edges in black pigment. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. An amulet like this one was made to be worn for protection, perhaps by a mother. Size: 1.35" W x 1.55" H (3.4 cm x 3.9 cm); 2.7" H (6.9 cm) on included custom stand.
