Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 18th to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. A simple and elegant scarab that is hand-carved from opaque jasper of a sumptuous forest green color. The top of the ovoid scarab showcases a petite head, a bulbous wing carapace, and thinly incised grooves around the base indicative of legs. The unadorned bottom bears minute diagonal striations that illustrate how any inscribed message has been worn away, either naturally or intentionally. Size: 0.625" L x 0.4" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Orange, California, USA collection, inherited by descent from Philip Mitry, noted antiquarian in Cairo prior to 1951, when he immigrated to the US
