Lot 11A
North Africa, Morocco, Devonian Period, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. An impressive elongated fossilized shell of ancient Orthoceras, a long-extinct genus of marine cephalopod related to modern squid and nautilus, carved in high relief and polished above a flat stone matrix panel. This straight-shelled ammonite could grow to remarkable sizes, with some species reaching lengths of over 14 feet. The fossilized remains presented here measure 60 inches in length (152.4 cm); this measurement excludes the wider raised section at the base, which is part of the surrounding matrix that has been shaped and polished to suggest the open terminal chamber of the original shell. Finely sculpted and smoothly contoured, the form tapers gracefully from base to crest, emphasizing its organic geometry and deep geological history. Size: 78.5" L x 7" W (199.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
