Description:

Emile Bujon (French, XIX century). Soldier on horseback. Oil on canvas, 1891. Signed and dated at lower right. A commanding vision of military poise and discipline, this 1891 oil painting by Emile Bujon captures a French cavalryman astride his mount, set against an open field bathed in quiet light. The rider, helmeted and upright, holds the reins with composure, embodying the dignity and vigilance of the soldier's art. The horse, rendered with fluid strength and dark sheen, stands tense and alive, its tail lifted by a light wind that animates the stillness of the scene. Bujon's deft brushwork and tonal restraint recall the Romantic legacy of 19th-century French military painting, where equestrian portraits became emblems of valor and national identity. His attention to uniform and bearing reveals a painter deeply familiar with martial detail, yet sensitive to atmosphere and mood. Size of painting: 8.25" W x 10.5" H (21 cm x 26.7 cm); of frame: 13.125" W x 15.125" H (33.3 cm x 38.4 cm)

The grassy plain, painted in loose, impressionistic strokes of ochre and green, contrasts the figure's rigid discipline with the softness of nature's expanse.

Active in the later decades of the 19th century, Emile Bujon was known for his vivid portrayals of cavalry officers, cuirassiers, and hunting scenes featuring dogs and rustic life. His works celebrate the pageantry of uniformed life and the poetry of the open field, bridging the world of the soldier and the artist.
