Western Europe, England, Georgian period, ca. 1813 CE. A sterling silver sugar caster of baluster form on a spreading circular foot. The shoulder is hallmarked with the passant lion sterling standard mark, the crowned leopard London city mark, the date letter "S" for 1813, and the George III duty mark in profile, along with an additional maker mark now rubbed and indistinct. The foot rim is chased with an egg-and-dart border and engraved with a crest showing an armored arm holding a knife beneath the motto "Deo duce." A reeded band encircles the shoulder. The removable domed, conical lid is pierced for sifting and decorated with matching egg-and-dart bands, and it is topped by an acorn-and–oak-leaf finial. The interior retains a pale gold wash, approximately 14% gilding, contrasting with the bright silver exterior.
