Description:

North America, United States, Nebraska, Late Eocene period, ca. 35 to 34 million years ago. A group of three molar teeth with gray enamel, two still anchored within a section of original jawbone, representing a member of the Brontotheriidae. The teeth show broad, worn chewing surfaces and strong roots, adapted for processing soft vegetation. Brontotheres were large prehistoric ungulates with heavy bodies, stout legs, and paired nasal appendages, resembling rhinoceroses but more closely related to early horses. They browsed in dense, forested environments, but changing climates and the spread of open grasslands contributed to their decline and eventual extinction. Size: 7" L x 2" W x 4" H (17.8 cm x 5.1 cm x 10.2 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
