Lot 206
Europe, Medieval, ca. 13th to 15th century CE; Continental Europe, Rococo Revival, late 19th to early 20th century CE; Europe, early to mid-20th century CE. A group of four small metal ornaments spanning seven centuries of European craftsmanship. The earliest two, cast in copper-tin-lead alloys, date to the medieval period and exemplify the durable artistry of gunmetal bronze. One forms a trefoil pendant of clustered spheres, the other an ovoid drop with a pierced suspension loop - both likely used as decorative fittings or amulets, their compact forms reflecting the functional yet ornamented aesthetic of the 13th to 15th centuries. By contrast, the silver plaque with twin putti engaged in playful relief belongs to the Rococo Revival of the late 19th to early 20th century. Nearly pure silver, it evokes the lighthearted sensuality of Baroque ornament adapted for charms or pendants fashionable in continental Europe. Size of largest: 1.4" L x 0.9" W (3.6 cm x 2.3 cm); silver quality: largest: 49%, putti: 99.6%; weight of putti: 0.9 grams
The largest piece, a pressed and silvered copper dress clip with floral repousse, typifies mid-20th century costume jewelry, where mass production met the lingering romance of hand-finished design. Together, these four objects trace the evolution of European decorative metals - from the pious and practical bronzes of the Middle Ages to the gleaming indulgence of modern adornment.
