Nayarit. Ca. 100 B.C. - 250 A.D. Exceptional pair of orange ware pottery, male and female seated figures. She sits with legs crossed and wears a knee length skirt, decorated arm bands, necklace, fancy ear ornaments, twist type headband and nose ornament. Painted sash across her chest. She holds a bowl in her right hand, left hand resting on her knee. Overall painted white, black and ocher geometric decoration, skirt with a painted box textile pattern. Intact, exc. cond. The male is seated with legs crossed and holds a large knife in his right hand, and a ball in his left hand. Wearing a shirt with a beautifully painted textile design, decorated arm bands and loincloth, elaborate ear ornaments and nose ornament, and a twist type head band. Each has a toothy grin, and overall strong scattered mineral deposits. The hand holding the knife has been reattached with break lines left visible, head cleanly reattached with restoration over the break line, otherwise intact, exc. cond. A very impressive, large top quality pair. Size: 16-3/4" & 16-1/8"H. x 10"W.

Provenance: Private NYC. collection. Ex. Bruce Rogers collection, San Francisco, CA., acquired 1960's from Harold J. Wagner, CA., to Gregory Wilcox-Rogers by inheritance.
