Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno, ca. 1000 CE. A beautifully executed sculpture of a standing figure presenting an expressive visage comprised of ovoid eyes, a disproportionately large nose (this feature particularly characteristic of Manteno faces), a partially opened mouth, large somewhat naturalistic ears, nicely contoured facial planes, and a pointy chin. The figure stands in an erect, rigid pose with arms at sides and feet together - as if at attention or chanting to a deity - donning a large headdress, a v-shaped necklace, and a tunic (possibly a waist wrap given that the belly button shows). The shoulder-length coiffure is finely incised to represent straight hair, and the figure is laterally perforated on the back for attachment. Adding to its aesthetic, the blackware is beautifully burnished to present a lustrous finish. Size: 5.125" W x 12.625" H (13 cm x 32.1 cm)
