Description:

Totonaque culture, Veracruz, ca. 1450 CE. Fine pottery dignitary sitting with legs crossed under a long wrapped skirt, belted at the waist with a large bow in the front. Leaning slightly forward with both hands resting on knees. Wearing a double bundle pendant necklace. Depicted with exceptional expressive facial features, open toothy mouth with beautifully sculpted bow-shape lips, perforated flaring nostrils, and heavily lidded eyes, possibly singing or chanting. Long striated hairdo painted with black bitumen, and wearing a head band decorated with rows of impressed circular elements, and fancy ear ornaments. Body painted a flesh orange-pink, ocher bow and white skirt. An exceptional and beautiful example. Size: 15.75”H x 10”W (40 x 25.4cm).
