Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A charming pair of ritual vessels, each modeled in animal form and adorned with painted linear and dotted motifs. The larger vessel represents a llama or alpaca, hollow-bodied and raised on four legs, with a modeled head featuring upright ears and an open mouth. A small aperture on the back suggests use for pouring libations or depositing offerings of food or drink. The smaller vessel depicts a bird with a slightly curved beak, perched upon short legs, its rounded body painted in dotted and banded decoration. A rimmed opening at the top indicates similar ritual function, perhaps for holding fat, chicha, or other ceremonial substances. Size of llama: 11.5" L x 3.75" W x 5.5" H (29.2 cm x 9.5 cm x 14 cm); bird: 3" L x 2.25" W x 2" H (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; previously bequeathed to the Museum for Islamic Art, Jerusalem, Israel, stored for many years and exhibited in 1988; ex-Yosef A. Maiman collection, Consul of Peru A.H., acquired in 1993; ex-Kate Kemper collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1940s or earlier
