Pre-Columbian, Guerrero State, Mexico, Chontal culture Teotihuacan influence, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A powerful standing male figure carved from mottled greenstone, rendered in the bold, abstract lapidary style for which Guerrero sculpture is celebrated. The figure stands upright with arms held straight at the sides and short legs that terminate in squared feet, his disproportionately large head commanding attention with a heavy brow, slit-form eyes, triangular nose, and tightly pursed lips. Some pitting on the chest and torso may represent purposeful ritual mutilation, a practice intended to ritually 'kill' an object and release its spiritual power. The greenstone surface, with rich natural veining and mineral inclusions, enhances the timeless presence of the effigy, underscoring the sacred value of the material itself. Size: 2.7" W x 6.5" H (6.9 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece was exhibited and published in the catalog of the Nancy Fyfe Cardozier Gallery at The University of Texas Permian Basin during the exhibition "Echoes of Eternity: Mastery of Ancient Mesoamerican Art," held from August 27 to September 13, 2024.
