Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero-Mezcala, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A petite axe figure, finely carved and string-cut from a greenstone of deep blue-green hues. An early variant of Mezcala figures, the face is somewhat flat with sloping planes that meet at central ridge to suggest a nose, and the arms are indicated by two incised diagonal grooves, akin to forms initiated by the M-6 variant according to Carlo Gay. The mask-like eyes are suggested by a string cut band and the mouth is a slit or a groove in the lower half of the face. The neck is cut deeper, the arms are truncated pointed forms flanking its stubby, slightly separated legs. A wonderful example carved and detailed via string-cut technology from a beautiful stone of gray-green hues with white inclusions. Size: 2.75" W x 4" H (7 cm x 10.2 cm)
