Sonya Terpening (American, b. 1953). "Reap What You 'Sew'" watercolor, 1998. Signed and dated at lower right; titled on verso. A tender celebration of domestic ritual, Sonya Terpening's 1998 watercolor "Reap What You 'Sew'" captures the warmth and intimacy of the everyday. A glass vase brimming with golden daffodils commands the composition, their luminous petals glowing against a dark backdrop. Arranged on the table before them, a lace doily, a porcelain creamer, a bright red pincushion, and a loose ribbon evoke the rhythms of home life and the artistry of handiwork. Size of watercolor: 16" W x 12" H (40.6 cm x 30.5 cm); of frame: 24.5" W x 20.25" H (62.2 cm x 51.4 cm)
The title offers a clever play on words that resonates directly with the subject: the literal tools of sewing placed alongside the blossoming daffodils suggest that the rewards of patience, labor, and creativity are not unlike the harvest of a garden. Terpening has long spoken of her desire to share the world around her through color and light, and here she elevates humble objects into emblems of memory, nurture, and beauty.
About the artist: Sonya Terpening is a celebrated painter of the American West, whose work explores both the living traditions and storied past of the region. Born and raised in Oklahoma and now based in Grapevine, Texas, Terpening has long described her artistic journey as inseparable from the fable, history, and legend of the West. After earning her art degree at Oklahoma State University, she refined her practice under the mentorship of prominent American artists including Richard Schmid, Bettina Steinke, Donald Teague, and Lowell Ellsworth Smith. >
Terpening has explained her artistic vision simply: "When something moves me, be it a story or a scene, I want to express it in color and light so that the viewer can share the feeling. There is nothing more beautiful than this great land and the people living in it. I am drawn not only to the American west as it exists today but also to its history. There is something about the past that we all share that makes us better for remembering it. I think art touches the soul and teaches in ways words cannot."
Terpening's paintings, praised for their luminous color and narrative depth, have been exhibited at the "Prix de West Invitational" at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for more than three decades and at the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum for over a decade, where she received the Gold Medal in Watercolor in 2008. She has also been honored with the "Distinguished Alumni" award from Oklahoma State University and was NBC Oklahoma's "Oklahoma Artist" in 2017.
Her work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Gilcrease Museum, the Booth Western Art Museum, the Forbes Collection, the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, and Oklahoma State University, among others.
