Southeast Asia, Philippines, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved and gilt wood santo of Saint Francis of Assisi depicted stepping forward beside a petite animal - one of his attributes. The figure would have originally had arms made of ivory, which was a common sculptural material when it was made. Draped in his traditional hooded cloak, his tonsured head bears a calm expression and looks forward at the viewer; his arms are raised, possibly to display his stigmata. His head is removable suggesting his body may have once served as a receptacle for a relic. Saint Francis (ca. 1181 to 1226 CE) is one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic canon, the founder of the Franciscan Order, associated with kindness towards animals and the love of nature. - Condition: Missing arms; head is removable. Stable fissures to base. Weathering to surface with nicks, chips, abrasions and areas of old, inactive insect holes. Good remains of gilding and pigment and heavy patina.
