West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba or Hausa culture, ca. 1960s. A man's prestige free-flowing outer robe that was worn by elite members of West African society, known as an agbada or a riga; the entire ensemble consisted of the robe, an undershirt, matching pants, and usually a cap. The cotton panels are quilted together into a tunic / poncho shape with wide arm openings, neck slit, and extensive embroidered and appliqued with motifs layered on top - both geometric and asymmetric decorative that serve a talismanic and symbolic function. Such robes were worn during important functions such as funerals and weddings, and were treasured pieces that were passed down from father to son as heirlooms. Provenance: ex-private Poos collection, Overland Park, Kansas, USA; purchased directly from the artist in 2010 - One of the largest privately held quilt and textile collections in the world, the Poos Collection has evolved over 50 years and through extensive travels to allow for original or point of source acquisition. The collection includes international textiles and garments with an emphasis on West African textiles such as adire, aso oke, kente, and ewe woven prestige cloths.
