Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful pottery bowl known as a mokhfia presenting a rounded bottom, and thick walls that swell outwards to a wide, flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot and adorned in hues of violet, yellow, cobalt, seafoam green, and black on a white ground. The interior of the elegant vessel is skillfully hand-glazed with an abstract decorative program of 6 circles filled with floral designs, surrounding a central hexagon. A stylized band of undulating striations additionally embellishes the top of the rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. This is a large and lovely example! Size: 15.8" Diameter x 4" H (40.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
