Description:

Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, likely Sioux, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a beautiful and well-preserved leather and cotton panel with intricate glass beading from a section of fancy buckskin clothing. The leather panel tapers slightly, the 3 sides trimmed with a fringe, and the center beaded with hundreds of glass trade beads. These seed sized beads are stitched in tight rows to create symmetrical geometric patterns in red, greasy yellow, cobalt, light blue, and white. The white ground is broken by block and line designs in red and diamond shapes. Sioux women usually beaded on a white ground, the western most tribes favoring geometric, while eastern use more organic floral motifs. This beadwork may have been part of the decorative panels on a shirt, dress, or the trim on a legging, and is in excellent condition with very skilled beadwork! The piece is displayed in a modern Riker case. Size (leather panel): 15.25" L x 5" W (38.7 cm x 12.7 cm); (case): 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)
