**Originally Listed At $300**
South Asia, India / Burma border, Nagaland, Chakhesang Naga people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine cotton "elephant cloth," named for its depiction of elephants, which served as a powerful symbol of wealth and status among the Chakhesang Naga cultures. The face of this embroidery showcases several registers filled with animals and motifs, including birds, plants, and elephants, representing abundance and prosperity. This vibrant shawl was reserved for individuals who had hosted multiple village-wide feasts. As a token of honor, the shawl was presented to the host after the feast, granting them the right to wear it at future events and gatherings. Hosting such feasts was a significant honor, underscoring one's prosperity and generosity. Due to the limited width of Naga looms, panels of cloth were seamed together to create a more substantial and impressive drape. The embroidery was often a communal effort, with a group of women working together on the feast day to complete the shawl before presenting it to the honored host. Size: 74" L x 46" W (188 cm x 116.8 cm)
