Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful textile panel composed of natural cotton fibers that are dyed a dark blue color and loosely woven to create a rectangular swath. The blue body is decorated with vertical white bars on the sides as well as 23 large cruciform shapes with central square spaces brought forth with white fibers. Textile creations like this example have survived throughout the ages thanks to the dry, arid climate of Peru that mitigates mold and decomposition. Mounted atop a beige fabric panel that is stretched around a wooden display frame. Size (textile): 18.9" W x 16.8" H (48 cm x 42.7 cm); (display frame): 19.5" W x 17.25" H (49.5 cm x 43.8 cm)
