Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A hand-built redware pottery jar with a flat circular base, a spherical body, a gently corseted neck, and a thick rim surrounding the mouth. The highly burnished vessel is conservatively decorated with four attractive panels of minimalist vertical lines, and the vertical burnishing marks surrounding the neck create a pattern of their own. Size: 5.625" W x 7.9" H (14.3 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s

Minor abrasions and excisions to body and neck, with softening to some incised motifs, and fading to areas of original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
