Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A beautiful example of a mace head that is hand-carved from dark-colored stone. The bulbous head features eight acutely angled fins protruding around the circumference, and the flared base and cylindrical socketing shaft suggest this would have been fitted atop a large, dense pole. Chavin mace heads would have been mounted atop a slender wooden pole and used in battle. However, this example was perhaps a votive funerary offering based on the absence of evidence corresponding with combative involvement. Size: 4.125" W x 4" H (10.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
