Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully crafted and sizable storage chest constructed from thin wooden panels covered with stretched pigskin, which serves as the base for exquisite polychrome painted scenes. The exterior displays lively depictions of elegant courtesans gazing out over a serene garden adorned with water features and rocky outcrops. Fitted with brass side handles and a brass front clasp which retains a locked padlock (key not present), luckily the clasp was not locked in place! The interior is lined with a thin blue fabric and features a copper foil medallion at the center of the lid, finely detailed with a vibrant mountain scene portraying three figures, one emerging from a lotus - possibly the bodhisattva Guanyin. A striking piece that merges utilitarian design with rich Qing-era aesthetics. Size: 17.75" L x 17.75" W x 16.5" H (45.1 cm x 45.1 cm x 41.9 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s

  • Condition: The lid has a crack radiating across the width, and this extends through the wood to interior as well. Despite this, the piece is structurally sound and overall great condition. Lid opens easily and handles and clasp are intact. Fading and losses to some pigments and discoloration to surfaces as expected with age. Lid is more faded than the sides, likely due to sun exposure.
