Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A lovely pottery vessel with a petite circular base, a bulbous body with several rounded projections, a planar shoulder and collar, and a squat neck with a rim overhanging the interior. The neck exhibits highly-stylized anthropomorphic facial features including ovoid eyes with impressed pupils, a triangular nose, and puffy lips, all surrounded by broad panels of applied red pigment outlined in black. Registers of abstract curvilinear motifs course around the body and create pseudo-tattooing for the raised arms atop which they are presented. Size: 7" W x 6.1" H (17.8 cm x 15.5 cm).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private San Francisco, California, USA collection; ex-private Terry Allen collection
