Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A fascinating dish used for holding cosmetic substances, hand-carved from the bone of a bull. The bottom of the dish displays a bull with its forelegs trussed with rope to its hind legs, a slender tail curved between its legs, a wavy dewlap, and a squat hump with lightly incised striations indicative of hair. The raised head bears almond-shaped eyes, a crescent-shaped horn, and a stocky snout with incised nostrils. The top of the dish mirrors the bottom save for a shallow, ovoid receptacle used to hold the make-up. Smooth patina covers the entire dish. Size: 2.375" L x 0.9" W (6 cm x 2.3 cm)
