Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. This terracotta plaque has an interesting theme! An older man - possibly a Silenus figure - sits with a parrot. His clothing design mirrors that of the parrot's feathers. Parrots were an incredibly popular household pet in the Roman period. They first appeared in the region when Alexander's army brought them home to Greece from India around 327 BCE; they quickly became immensely popular as pets, and well-off Romans would pay tutors to teach their birds things to say in Latin! Size: 3.6" W x 5" H (9.1 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
