Description:

Ancient Seas, Paleocene to Miocene epoch, ca. 60 million to 6 million years ago. A lovely example of a fossilized tooth from an Otodontid shark (Otodontidae Otodus) with a dramatically-tapered form. The serrated edges of the tooth are still visible and are quite sharp given its advanced age; many of the individual serrations are still intact. A pair of smaller enamel protrusions flank the upper corners of the larger tooth body and exhibit similarly-sharpened serrations. Small vertical striations across the upper enamel are another result of the fossilization process, and a rough texture has formed across the upper root. Size: 3.6" W x 3.875" H (9.1 cm x 9.8 cm); 4.3" H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Upper root repaired from a few large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor chips to enamel and root, with light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout. Individual serrations are still sharp - likely re-sharpened in modern times.
