Description:

Eastern Greece, Rhodes, ca. 6th century BCE. A very fine, mold-made terracotta bust of a female, perhaps the goddess Demeter or Persephone, presenting with a tranquil visage comprised of wide-open eyes, an aquiline nose, and full lips forming a gentle smile with long plaited tresses flling past her shoulders beside her breasts and down her back. She wears a pointed hood or headdress as well as flowing robes with well-delineated drapery folds, and holds a votive object to her chest, possibly a small animal or pomegranate which was a custom to gain favor or pay tribute. Size: 4.625" W x 8.125" H (11.7 cm x 20.6 cm); 10.625" H (27 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: A fragment from a larger statue. Professionally repaired from about 8 pieces with restoration to the headdress and over the break lines. Normal surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age. Nice earthen and mineral deposits.
