Eastern Mediterranean, early Imperial period, ca. 1st - 2nd century CE. Exceptional cast bronze statuette depicting the winged goddess Victory or Nike, standing atop of a pedestal drum type base, with arms outstretched holding a laurel wreath in her right hand. The laurel wreath was used to crown the victor of a battle or athletic competition, and holds a pomegranate in her left hand. The presence of the pomegranate also suggests an ancient association with fertility and the abundance that follows a successful war or harvest. Wearing a floor length flowing drapery tied around her waist, with left leg exposed. Large wings on her back, hair pulled into a rear bun with locks extending to her chest. The ancient Roman base is possibly from a different statue, but is a beautiful match. A superb quality example in terms of definition and detail. Size: 5.25”H (13.3cm).
