Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Incan Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A gorgeous textile coca bag comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of crimson, navy, maroon, beige, cream, and coffee. A repeating design of abstract anthropomorphic figures - with two tails, ovoid bodies with concentric circular designs, and heads with three eyes - adorn the center of the bag. In-between the central columns is a repeating series of Janus-headed serpents, with three parallel columns of the same design flanking either of the bag's peripheral borders. Six fringed tassels hang from the bottom, giving it a personalized presentation evocative of ancient Incan artistry! Mounted on a thick fabric backing. Size (textile): 14" W x 21" H (35.6 cm x 53.3 cm); size (backing): 26.75" W x 34.25" H (67.9 cm x 87 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H. J. Westermann collection, Germany, acquired between 1960 and 1970
