Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Autlan type, post-Classic era, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A fascinating hand-sculpted ceramic figure of a woman, lying on her back with her knees raised, hands emerging at her waist as if she is giving birth to something adult-sized or monstrous. She wears a necklace that hangs down across one breast and large earrings; incised motifs on her body suggest tattoos or scarification, especially on her thighs. This is a powerful and striking sculpture. Size: 3.25" W x 2.7" H (8.3 cm x 6.9 cm); 3.55" H (9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
