Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Manabi culture, ca. 500 CE. A fine hollow-cast terracotta figure seated upon a planar base with hands resting on bent knees. A broad torso traces upwards to rounded shoulders, with a thick neck supporting an oversized head. The expressive visage is comprised of raised semicircular eyes, a prominent nose with an enormous twin-lobed nose ring, petite ears adorned with tasseled discoid earrings, a large grinning mouth, and a wide brow topped with a conical cap. Deep red pigment embellishes the face, and remnants of white pigmentation are visible on the cap. Size: 4.75" W x 6.9" H (12.1 cm x 17.5 cm).

  • Condition: One leg reattached with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to feet, body, and head, with some fading to pigmentation, and scattered areas of fire-darkening. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory number in black ink as well as old inventory label on base.
