Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely amulet of a somewhat rectangular form, hand-carved from mottled sage-green jadeite with minute dark inclusions. The amulet depicts a highly-stylized anthropomorphic face with wide ovoid eyes, a flared triangular nose, full lips, delineated nasolabial folds, and puffy cheeks, all beneath a smooth forehead. An elaborate headdress tops the face and bears large discoid earrings which hang in front of drooping ear flaps. A frilled collar is presented below the chin and imbues the head with a regal presentation. Size: 1.25" W x 1.125" H (3.2 cm x 2.9 cm); 2.125" H (5.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
