Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, Moche I period, ca. 100 to 550 CE. This is one my favorite objects in the auction! It is an intact example of a Moche stirrup vessel with the body of a llama carrying two vessels across its back. The llama has a, well, disgruntled look on this face and gorgeous tufted ears. The two vessels on his sides have incised decorations. The body of the llama and the stirrup and spout are painted creamy white, and the vessels and llama's head are painted an earthy red. Llamas were the largest domesticated animal in the Americas prior to Spanish contact, and they played a vital role in ancient Peru, transporting heavy loads up steep mountain paths to access remote villages and create a cohesive cultural area linked by roads and trade. Size: 8.15" L x 5.8" W (20.7 cm x 14.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private Hawaiian Collection acquired in the 1980's.
