Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A fine stirrup portrait vessel showing a standing warrior. He is portrayed as a younger man with bulging eyes and a serious expression. He has finely detailed hands with nails painted off-white. He wears a cross-hatched headdress with long strip of textile at the rear of his head. He wears a white collar over what appears to be barrel-type armor, shown where his arms extend from this military garb. He is overall painted dark red with cream-colored clothing and dark red details. This would have been a portrait of an important member of Moche society. Furthermore, it is possible - even probable - that there are portraits of him as an older man found in other vessels, as we know of several examples of Moche portrait vessels portraying the same individual at different stages of life!
