Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero State, Xochipala culture, Mesoamerican Formative Period, ca. 13th to 10th century BCE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery figure seated upon crossed legs and wearing shell-adorned footwear. Nude save for incised armlets, the figure holds a small perforated rod - perhaps a staff or a large flute - in both hands, and a twisted necklace is fashioned around a slender neck. Impressed almond-shaped eyes with pierced pupils, a triangular nose, a gaping mouth with thin lips, and a smooth brow comprise the minimalist visage, and the head is capped with an intricate coiffure of incised bangs. The arms, body, and legs are adorned with bright red pigmentation, making this an attractive example of ancient Xochipala art! Size: 2.1" W x 2.75" H (5.3 cm x 7 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
