Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A group of five ushabtis formed as small mummiform figures with softly modeled faces and feet tapering into simple integral bases, their faience surfaces ranging from blue-green to chalky white. Ushabtis were placed in tombs to serve the deceased in the afterlife, performing manual labor at the call of Osiris as substitutes for their master. Their form and material reflected ancient Egyptian beliefs in transformation and rebirth - faience, with its luminous blue sheen, was considered a medium of immortality tied to the life-giving power of the Nile river. Size of largest: 2.5" L x 0.75" W (6.4 cm x 1.9 cm)
