Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. mid-20th century CE. A group of 5 bone and sperm whale tooth Billiken figures, each bearing the distinctive mischievous expression and squat posture associated with these folkloric icons. The three pearly white figures are made from whale tooth and highly polished. Characterized by smiling faces, closed eyes, and stylized incised markings, these figures embody the whimsical spirit of the Billiken - a good-luck symbol adopted into Alaska Native art in the early 20th century. The Billiken, though originally conceived in the lower 48 states as a charm of happiness and luck, was swiftly embraced and reimagined by Inuit artists, becoming a popular theme in souvenir ivory carvings sold in Alaskan curio markets during the 20th century.
