Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cohesive and visually compelling group, this lot comprises five Roman cloak pins that speak to the everyday mechanics of dress in the ancient world, where function and quiet ornament met in bronze and copper. Slender and elegant in profile, these pins would have secured cloaks and garments, serving as both utilitarian fasteners and subtle markers of personal style. Four of the pins are cast in bronze, each tapering to a sharp point and surmounted by simple finials ranging from rounded to gently faceted forms. Their surfaces display a stable green patina, developed over centuries, with areas of darker oxidation that accentuate the contours of the shafts. The fifth and most petite example is distinguished by a discoid finial and is crafted from copper, its warmer tonality setting it apart within the group and suggesting either a different workshop tradition or a deliberate material choice. Size of largest (smooth pin): 10.2" L (25.9 cm)

The variation in finial design and proportion reflects the diversity of Roman personal adornment, even within objects intended for daily use. Such pins were ubiquitous across the Empire, worn by men and women alike, and could signal regional taste, economic status, or simple personal preference. Together, this group offers a compact study in Roman metalwork and dress accessories, well suited for collectors interested in daily life artifacts, comparative typology, or the tactile remnants of Imperial Rome's material culture.
