Description:

North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Pleistocene, ca. 2 million to 10,000 years ago. This is a fine example of a woolly mammoth molar from a juvenile! The tooth has developed a lovely chocolate brown hue due to mineral composition of the sediment and fossilization process, the dentine turning into silica rich quartzite. Mammoths had 4 sets of molars, going through 6 sets of teeth as they age - the teeth start at about 1 inch (2.54 cm) as calves and reaching 9 to 12 inches (22.86 to 30.48 cm) as an adult at around 30 years old. This tooth is from a younger animal on either the first or second set of teeth and is a wonderful example to study further and to display. Size: 3.5" L x 2.25" W x 3" H (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm x 7.6 cm)
