North Africa, Sahara, Morocco / Algeria, mid-Cretaceous, ca. 100 to 93 million years old. North Africa, Sahara, mid-Cretaceous, ca. 100 to 93 million years old. A fossilized tooth from Carcharodontosaurus, one of the largest predatory dinosaurs known, rivaling Tyrannosaurus rex in size and ferocity. The tooth displays the characteristic recurved shape and finely serrated edges that enabled this apex predator to tear through the flesh of large herbivores. Mineral replacement over millions of years has imbued the enamel with rich umber and mahogany hues, evidence of iron oxide fossilization processes within the Saharan deposits. Named for its shark-like dentition, Carcharodontosaurus - meaning "shark-toothed lizard" - was aptly titled for its formidable cutting teeth. This specimen is presented in a modern floating display case for both preservation and presentation. Size of tooth: 3.7" L x 1.3" W (9.4 cm x 3.3 cm); display stand: 9.5" W (24.1 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) Size of tooth: 3.7" L x 1.3" W (9.4 cm x 3.3 cm); display stand: 9.5" W (24.1 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm)
