Description:

Jurassic Period, ca. 206 to 144 million years ago. A chevron is one of the series of bones on the ventral (under) side of the tail in many species, including reptiles, dinosaurs, kangaroos, and manatees. Their function is to protect parts of the tail like nerves and blood vessels from being damaged when the animal supports its weight on the tail. The presence of chevrons in the remains of these huge dinosaurs have led paleontologists to theorize that they were capable of standing on their hind legs to reach foliage, as in the famous scene from Jurassis Park. Diplodocus is the longest known dinosaur; its tail had 82 vertebrae and its full body length could have reached over 100 feet. Diplodocus lived in a very different Wyoming than the one we know today; interior western North America during the Jurassic period was a shallow, warm, sea. Diplodocus and other dinosaurs that it coexisted alongside left behind their footprints and bodies in these shallow waters; when the Rocky Mountains were formed in the Laramide Orogeny 70-80 million years ago, the rocks bearing their fossilized remains were thrust upwards and exposed. This is why some of the richest fossil beds in the world are along the edges of the Rocky Mountains. Dana Quarry, where the holotype of this cast came from, is famous for containing the remains of a large group of herbivorous dinosaurs, including Diplodocus, died together in a shrinking water hole. Although this was undoubtedly a terrible fate for the individual dinosaurs, they have left paleontologists with some of the best preserved fossilized remains of their species. Size: 9" tall, 5" wide, and 1" deep.
