Description:

Ancient Seas, North America, Eastern United States, Silurian period, ca. 443.8 to 419.2 million years ago. A fascinating fossilized arthropod within a rectangular slate matrix known as Eurypterus remipes, a prehistoric 'sea scorpion.' The creatures had a head with a plate like carapace and two bean shaped eyes on the top off the head as well as a simple pair of light-sensing eyes in the center between the main eyes. From the head are pincers for eating, short legs, and the largest limbs are shaped like paddles for swimming. The segmented abdomen tapers to a needle tip known as the telson - which was not a stinger but used for swimming. These extinct creatures are related to today's horseshoe crab and prehistoric trilobites. Eurypterids represent what many scientists believe to be the first life-forms that progressed out of water onto dry land! This specimen is well preserved with fine details that contrast with the lighter gray slate matrix. Size (fossil): 4" L x 3" W (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm); (stone matrix): 6.25" L x 1" W x 8" H (15.9 cm x 2.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
