Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Erfoud region, Silurian to early Devonian era, ca. 443 to 400 million years ago. A well-preserved crinoid fossil of Scyphocrinites elegans displayed in relief within a dark stone matrix, showing a dense crown of articulated arms radiating outward in a fan-like arrangement. Shimmering pyrite inclusions enliven the surface of the stone, while the central calyx and upper stem remain clearly defined. The lower portion preserves part of the stem, curving downward with several natural breaks and scattered segments from fossilization. Unlike most crinoids, Scyphocrinites is believed to have been free-floating, supported by a buoyant bulb at the end of its stem, allowing it to hang inverted near the ocean surface. From this position, it extended its arms to filter-feed on plankton drifting in the water column. This specimen is mounted on a custom wooden display base. Size of matrix: 8.75" L x 5.5" W x 0.5" H (22.2 cm x 14 cm x 1.3 cm); wood base: 10.5" L x 6" W (26.7 cm x 15.2 cm)
